Round Beaded and Quilled Earrings - Turquoise
Round Beaded and Quilled Earrings - Turquoise
These earrings are made with porcupine quilled rawhide circles that are tacked onto leather. The bead work is made with size 13 beads. Finished with a parfleche feather.
These earrings are a little under an inch in diameter. The feather and beads are about three-quarters of an inch in total length.
Quillwork is one of the many traditional art forms of the Lakota people. There is a lot of time and work that goes into quillwork. The quills are removed from a porcupine, then are cleaned, dyed, soaked until pliable and woven or sewn into designs unique to every family or tribe. Quillwork is not water resilient and should be well taken care of.
