Double Medicine Wheel Medallion - Turquoise
Double Medicine Wheel Medallion - Turquoise
This beautifully crafted medallion tie is made with a quilled medicine wheel that is tacked down on leather. The leather is partially beaded with size 11 beads. The medallion is a little under 3 inches in diameter, centered with two parfleche feathers each attached with a string of beads. The medallion is finished with leather for the backing. The leather lacing is about 26 inches in length(including the bone beads).
Quillwork is one of the many traditional art forms of the Lakota people. There is a lot of time and work that goes into quillwork. The quills are removed from a porcupine, then are cleaned, dyed, soaked until pliable and woven or sewn into designs unique to every family or tribe. Quillwork is not water resilient and should be well taken care of.
