Porcupine Quill Earrings - Black with White Shells
Porcupine Quill Earrings - Black with White Shells
These earrings are made with dyed porcupine quills wrapped around strips of rawhide. They are just over 1.5 inches tall and just under .5 inches at the widest. White shell pendant is about .5 of an inch in diameter. Total length of earring is just over 2.25 inches in length. (Measurements do not include the hook)
Quillwork is one of the many traditional art forms of the Lakota people. There is a lot of time and work that goes into quillwork. The quills are removed from a porcupine, then are cleaned, dyed, soaked until pliable and woven or sewn into designs unique to every family or tribe. Quillwork is not water resilient and should be well taken care of.
