These earrings are made with dyed porcupine quills wrapped around small metal strips(better for the humid climates). They are just under 2 inches tall and just under .5 inches at the widest. (Just under 3 inches in length from top of earring to bottom of feather)
Quillwork is one of the many traditional art forms of the Lakota people. There is a lot of time and work that goes into quillwork. The quills are removed from a porcupine, then are cleaned, dyed, soaked until pliable and woven or sewn into designs unique to every family or tribe. Quillwork is not water resilient and should be well taken care of.
