These earrings are made with rawhide strips decorated with woven porcupine quills secured into hoops with headpins decorated with faceted rainbow hematite. They are finished with nickle plated earring hooks
The ring is just over 1.5 inches in diameter.
Quillwork is one of the many traditional art forms of the Lakota people. There is a lot of time and work that goes into quillwork. The quills are removed from a porcupine, then are cleaned, dyed, soaked until pliable and woven or sewn into designs unique to every family or tribe. Quillwork is not water resilient and should be well taken care of.
