This small pouch is leather pouch is beaded with size 13 beads, decorated with strips of rawhide wrapped with dyed porcupine quills tacked onto buckskin. The pouch is just over an inch wide(includes the beaded edging) and just over 3 inches tall, quill work is about an inch tall. The leather necklace is just under 29 inches long.
Quillwork is one of the many traditional art forms of the Lakota people. There is a lot of time and work that goes into quillwork. The quills are removed from a porcupine, then are cleaned, dyed, soaked until pliable and woven or sewn into designs unique to every family or tribe. Quillwork is not water resilient and should be well taken care of.
