Porcupine Quill Earrings - Four Colors with White Shell Disks
Porcupine Quill Earrings - Four Colors with White Shell Disks
These earrings are made with dyed porcupine quills wrapped around strips of rawhide. They are just over 1.5 inches tall and about .25 of an inch wide. Diameter of the shell disk 10 mm.
Quillwork is one of the many traditional art forms of the Lakota people. There is a lot of time and work that goes into quillwork. The quills are removed from a porcupine, then are cleaned, dyed, soaked until pliable and woven or sewn into designs unique to every family or tribe. Quillwork is not water resilient and should be well taken care of.
